Step views

3 simple steps for this play.

Step 1

Corner charges

First base attacks the bunt and the pitcher fills the bag right away.

Ball 1B Line P C 1B 2B SS 3B LF CF RF
  • 1B: Charge the bunt hard and field it in front if possible.
  • P: Sprint to first base as soon as you read bunt.
  • 2B: Slide toward the line in case the bunt rolls farther.

Step 2

Bases are protected

The left side of the infield makes sure third base is not left open.

3B 2B Plate Backup P C 1B 2B SS 3B LF CF RF
  • 3B: Hold third base because the lead runner started on second.
  • SS: Cover second so there is still a middle-infield target.
  • C: Stay ready at home in case the bunt is popped or misplayed.
  • LF: Move behind third as extra protection.

Step 3

Take the sure out

The ball goes to first unless the lead runner makes the defense rush.

Throw Out Backup P C 1B 2B SS 3B LF CF RF
  • 1B: Make the short throw to the pitcher covering the bag.
  • P: Catch the throw on the move and get the easy out.
  • RF: Stay shallow on the line to stop any overthrow from rolling away.
